HiTOPS offers the following services to ensure schools are affirming for students of all identities.
Starting a Gender & Sexuality Alliance (GSA)
Students are entitled to safe spaces and the presence of a GSA within a school is proven to enhance the school climate and culture not just for LGBTQ+ students, but for all students. HiTOPS staff can work with administrators, counselors, and designated GSA advisors to develop activity plans and to consult regarding recruitment efforts to help a school’s club be successful, effective, and responsive to students’ needs.
“Train the Trainer” — SOGIE Ambassador Series
In our SOGIE Ambassador Series, school leadership identifies important school stakeholders—ambassadors—with diverse roles (principals, counselors, nurses, teachers, coaches, support staff, etc.), and these folks undergo a learning series which would equip them to be the on-site SOGIE experts for the various schools and departments within a school district. Participants would engage in the content listed above, gain access to resources they can share with other school professionals, be equipped to lead SOGIE trainings and conversations, and be able to consult with HiTOPS staff as needed.
Curriculum Development
HiTOPS can work in partnership with teachers and administrators to ensure that curriculum is inclusive and representative of all identities and adheres to the New Jersey State Learning Standards.
Curriculum Leasing
HiTOPS has lessons and resources available for leasing.
Policy Assessment and Development
HiTOPS can work with district stakeholders to ensure that school policies for students and staff are affirming for people of all identities.
HIB Intervention
As school administrators consider the most appropriate course of action following the filing of a harassment, intimidation, or bullying (HIB) report, HiTOPS recognizes that many schools prefer to implement restorative measures rather than punitive measures to support students. HiTOPS offers individual and small group interventions for victims and/or offenders in HIB cases related to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression.
