How Not To Do It!
Abstinence is the only 100% effective way to avoid unintended pregnancies and STD’s.
There are plenty of misconceptions when it comes to using abstinence as a birth control method. Folks often believe that abstinence is a complete shutdown of all sexual activity, but that’s not at all what it is. It’s simply not engaging in oral, anal, or vaginal sex.
Abstinence sounds simple – not having sex – but most people have sexual urges, particularly adolescents, and it can be difficult not to act on them. Abstinence takes work, patience, trust, and communication between partners. However, when used correctly, abstinence is unbeatable as a birth control method.
There are many reasons why people choose abstinence. Perhaps they do not have access to a reliable birth control method, they have other goals, or like many, they simply are not ready for sex. When choosing to remain abstinent, or engaging in sexual intercourse, always remember to talk to your partner to ensure you are practicing your abstinence correctly!
PRO TIP: If you feel embarrassed or have difficulty talking your partner about whether or not they wish to have sex, you’re probably not ready for it.
