Male Condom

A condom is a thin membrane that fits over the erect penis.  Condoms work by providing a barrier that sperm cannot get through.  Condoms that are made of latex or polyurethane protect against sexually transmitted diseases as well as against pregnancy.  Condoms are 88% effective in preventing pregnancy when used properly. They are 98% effective for preventing pregnancy when the female also uses a spermicidal gel, film or suppository. Condoms can be obtained free at HiTOPS and other clinics, or purchased at pharmacies or supermarkets.

How do you use them?

  • Check expiration date

  • Open package carefully

  • Be sure condom is right side up so it will roll down properly

  • Squeeze air out of tip

  • Roll condom down to base of erect penis

  • After ejaculation, hold onto rim of condom at the base of the penis

  • Withdraw penis while still erect

  • Roll condom off facing away from your partner and discard.

  • Never use a condom more than once

  • Do not use two condoms together, as this creates friction which can cause a tear in the condom

Side Effects:

In rare cases, either the male or the female partner can have an allergic reaction to latex.  Use condoms along with another method (spermicides, birth control pills, the shot, etc.) for the best pregnancy prevention.
