HIV Testing and Counseling

HiTOPS offers HIV testing and counseling by appointment. Please call us at 609-683-5155 to make an appointment. You can also find additional HIV testing and counseling sites in New Jersey at www.state.nj.us/health/aids/ctsites.htm.

How much does it cost?

It’s free. HiTOPS gets money from the State of New Jersey and other supporters to provide the testing free of charge. For states outside New Jersey, call the National AIDS Hotline, 1-800-342-AIDS.

Who can come to HiTOPS for an HIV test?

Any young person aged 13 to 26. HiTOPS is an affirming place for teens of all sexual orientations.

Is it confidential?

HiTOPS offers confidential testing. We do not notify your parents of your visit to HiTOPS. Confidential testing means that your records can only be released with your written consent, unless the information is needed for legally authorized purposes in accordance with state law.

What should I expect when I come there?

HIV testing and counseling requires two appointments. The first appointment takes about 30 minutes and involves learning about HIV, how it is transmitted, and discussing your sexual history with the counselor. This is a good time to ask any questions you have. Next, the counselor will do the HIV test which is a blood test. A small amount of blood will be taken from a vein in your arm or hand into a sterile test tube.

When do I get my results?

You return to HiTOPS for a second appointment two weeks after your first appointment. You receive your results at the second appointment; we cannot give results over the phone. The HIV counselor can explain your test results, answer your questions about HIV and how you can reduce your risk of contracting HIV, and discuss with you whether you might need to be tested again at a later date.

Can I bring a friend/partner with me for support if I want to?

Yes, you definitely can. Since it is important to be as honest as you can with the HIV counselor in discussing your sexual history, the counselor will ask your friend to wait for you in our waiting room.
