Emergency Contraception Pills (ECPs)
"The Morning After Pill"

ECPs are hormone pills, similar to birth control pills, taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse for the purpose of preventing pregnancy.

How do they work?

ECPs prevent pregnancy.  The hormones prevent ovulation, prevent conception or prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus. ECPs are not an abortion pill. If a woman is already pregnant, the pills will not disrupt the pregnancy. ECPs prevent a pregnancy that would have occurred.

Side effects:

The ECPs we prescribe at HiTOPS do not usually cause side effects.  The most common side effect is a change in the timing of the next menstrual period which may be either earlier or later than otherwise expected.  A few women who take them may have an upset stomach or a headache.

How do I take them?

When you come to HiTOPS we will provide you with complete instructions on taking your ECPs.  The following are general directions for taking ECPs.

1. Take the first dose of pills as soon as possible, but within 72 hours after unprotected sex.

2. Take the second dose of pills 12 hours after the first dose.

How will I know if it works?

Your next period may start a few days earlier or later than usual. If your period doesn't start within 2 to 3 weeks, come in for a pregnancy test. If you are nervous about it, you may also come for a pregnancy test 10 days after the incident of unprotected sex.

ECPs are not intended as a method of birth control. They are for emergency use only. It is important to use a reliable form of birth control along with condoms for best protection.
