Depo-Provera

Depo-Provera is an injectable form of contraception (given as a shot) that prevents pregnancy for 3 months.  Depo-Provera is synthetic progesterone that stops egg cells from ripening in the ovary so that ovulation does not occur.  Depo-Provera is over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy when given every three months.  It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections or the HIV virus.  The first injection must be given during the first 5 days of a normal menstrual period.

Who should use it?

This is a good form of birth control for people who need total confidentiality as it is completely private.   This form of birth control is good for a person who can't remember or doesn't like to take pills, or who doesn't want to use the patch or the ring.

Side effects:

The most frequently reported side effect is irregular menstrual bleeding, which may include:

  • More days of bleeding than usual.

  • Unpredictable bleeding.

  • Eventually, no bleeding at all while using Depo-Provera.

  • Some women also note increased appetite.

Use condoms along with Depo-Provera for best protection.
