More about HiTOPS Teen Council “Talk to Me: A Family Night Event”:
Family Night gives parents, guardians and teens the opportunity to talk about issues like privacy, trust, and independence in a non-threatening, fun and dynamic workshop. This workshop will help increase comfort with difficult conversations by encouraging adult-teen communication. When families have a forum for these important conversations, it’s more likely young people will grow into strong and healthy adults.
Research demonstrates that teens who talk with their parents about sex and sexuality are less likely to engage in high-risk behavior. However, most parents feel uncomfortable talking openly with their children about these issues. Parents are often well-intentioned and want to discuss sex and sexuality with their children, but they are not sure how to begin. Teenagers report wanting to have these honest discussions with parents, but they often feel that same discomfort.
Previous attendees say they “feel more comfortable talking with their teens” about sexuality, and that they are more likely to initiate a conversation about sexuality with the teens in their lives.
